Managing Your Credit Report
Checking your credit report annually is one of the best ways to see if you have been a victim of fraud. Many times people have no idea they have had their identity stolen until they review their credit report. Someone may have intentionally gained access to your personal information and obtained credit in your name.
Checking your credit report allows you to manage the content of your report.
You might have credit card accounts that you thought were closed, but after
viewing your report you learn they are still open. Reviewing your report annually
will give you peace of mind and will keep your credit in good shape. Get a
free copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus
every 12 months. Go to www.annualcreditreport.com or
call (877) 322-8228 to order your credit report directly. Calling is the best
way to order your credit report. If you do decide to order your credit report
online, make sure you enter the correct web address. Otherwise, you could be
led to an imposter site acting as a "free credit report" web site.
Reading a credit report can be overwhelming. Make sure that you go through your report entry by entry. If you need assistance reading and understanding your report, turn to our Financial Counselor. This confidential service is free.
